The Boy Scouts are hurting children who are hurting children.

Dear  Mr. Surbaugh Chief Scout Executive,

The recent policy change is harmful to children and must be reconsidered with facts, not ideology, social pressure, financial impact or litigious concerns. In keeping with my oath I must help other people at all times. Helping others has driven me to write and hopefully cause you to think more deeply about the transgender issue. Much of what I will write is adapted from the American College of Pediatrics statement on gender identity which you can find at

I ask you to thoughtfully consider the following statement: facts determine reality, not ideology nor one's perception. Sir, please read that a few times. Facts determine reality.

No one is born with an awareness of themselves as male or female; this awareness develops over time and, like all developmental processes, may be derailed by a child’s subjective perceptions, relationships, and adverse experiences from infancy forward. A girl who believes that she is something she is not, a boy, is at best confused thinking. This is no different than a 5'6" girl who weighs 60 pounds looking in the mirror and seeing an overweight body. We treat that as a mental disorder called anorexia and provide therapy, support and love because we can see the fact that they are dangerously thin, woefully confused and headed down a deadly path.

Would you ever look at that 60 pound girl and tell her that what she sees in the mirror is indeed reality? Would you? So then why are you looking at a young girl with the genetic makeup of XX telling her: “Yes dear you are indeed a boy”? Facts determine realty, and the fact is an XX makeup is indeed a female, that’s a fact.

When a biological girl believes she is a boy, an objective psychological problem exists that lies in the mind not the body. She suffers from Gender Dysphoria (GD). GD is a recognized mental disorder in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-V). According to the DSM-V (page 455), as many as 98% of gender confused boys and 88% of gender confused girls eventually accept their biological sex after naturally passing through puberty. Yet the BSA has either ignored or not even consider these statistics. Will you consider the facts please? Will you pledge to help these children at all times, or will you affirm them in their confused thinking as the BSA promotes their impersonation of the opposite sex?

Neuroscience reveals that the pre-frontal cortex of the brain which is responsible for judgment and risk assessment is not mature until the mid-twenties. Never has it been more scientifically clear that children and adolescents are incapable of making informed decisions. The new BSA policy promotes dangerous, risky, confused thinking that may evolve into the use or hormone blockers and “gender re-assignment surgery”. We cannot predict if the girl who currently identifies as a boy will indeed move toward medical interventions. However it is clear that endorsing their confused thinking encourages young girls to continue down a path that is shown to be deadly and depressing. To not endorse the confused thinking is to at the least not push them down a risky path. Rates of suicide are nearly twenty times greater among adults who use cross-sex hormones and undergo sex reassignment surgery. Will the BSA condemn young children to this fate knowing that after puberty as many as 88% of girls and 98% of boys will eventually accept reality. Affirming a child’s thoughts which are contrary to physical reality is not in that child’s best interest and it is certainly not morally straight, helpful or kind.

To rescind the new policy is to stand up for the wellbeing of confused children who need love, support and counseling. Keep the hands of the BSA free from the blood of those who are sadly at an increased risk for suicide. Sir, please consider that you are now a contributing factor to a behavior that is factually shown to be dangerous, even deadly. Stand on your oath to help other people at all times, rescind the policy and commit to helping those confused children by not endorsing a belief that is detached from the facts. Do your good turn and rescind the change.
